What Are Cataracts?

We consider ourselves eye care nerds at Mohave Eye Center, so to best explain cataracts, you need to know a bit about your eyes! Inside the eye, there’s a lens — like that of a camera — which focuses the light you see and sends a crisp picture to your brain. This lens is crystal-clear when you’re born but can become clouded and foggy as you age due to the breakdown of proteins. “Cataract” is simply the term for when this lens becomes clouded, most often because of aging, but sometimes injury.

Old Man that Needs a Cataract Surgery

Do You Need Cataract Surgery?

As there’s no cure for them, surgery is the only way to get rid of cataracts. If left untreated, your eye’s lens will continue to deteriorate until your vision is severely impaired, or worse, completely lost. At Mohave Eye Center, you can have your cataracts removed and lens replaced in a quick outpatient procedure — but if you’re not ready yet, we can help you get by with eyewear to help your eyes adapt to changes in sight. During surgery, we’ll remove the foggy lens and replace it with a synthetic intraocular lens (IOL), like a toric IOL.

Some symptoms of cataracts include:

  • Blurry, fuzzy, and even double vision up close and far away
  • Difficulty seeing at night
  • Halos, starbursts, or glare around lights or the sun’s rays
  • Trouble driving and reading due to impaired sight
  • Frequent changes in the prescription of your glasses

If you suspect you may have cataracts, schedule an eye exam with us so our doctors can thoroughly check your eyes!

Candidate for Cataract Surgery

Are You a Candidate?

Most likely, yes! If you’re experiencing any of the above symptoms and are confirmed to have cataracts, you could be a candidate for cataract surgery. This procedure is a great choice for healthy adults who don’t have a particular medical condition that may prevent proper recovery. To find out if cataract surgery is in your future, schedule an appointment with us today for a personalized consultation!

Standard and Premium IOLs in Kingman, AZ

Standard and Premium IOLs

One of the many amazing things about cataract surgery is that you can truly customize your vision by choosing which IOL your surgeon will use. We offer a standard IOL, but also others like the toric IOLs for astigmatism, and more.

Our IOLs include:

  • Basic lens (monofocal): corrects your vision at one distance. You may likely still need glasses for some activities, such as reading.
  • Multifocal lens: clears your vision at multiple distances, reducing your dependence on corrective eyewear.
  • Toric IOL: treats astigmatism at one power of focus, meaning some patients may need reading glasses.
  • Monovision lens: uses a monofocal lens in both eyes, set to different powers of focus — one for distance, and one for close up — to reduce the need for eyewear.
  • Blended vision (mini-monovision): using monofocal lenses, one eye is set to distance vision and the other at an intermediate focus, meaning you can see great without eyewear, yet may need reading glasses.

Our team can personally answer any questions you have about our different IOL options and what they can do for your vision, lifestyle, goals, and budget.
